Throwback Thursday is the segment that takes you down Memory Lane for the races each week. This week, we’re sticking with open wheel racing and going back to the 2013 Freedom 100.
2013 Freedom 100
The Freedom 100 is the big Memorial Day weekend race for the Indy Lights Series (it’s the highest level minor league for IndyCar – for the NASCAR fans, this series is equivalent to the Xfinity Series). Usually, the Freedom 100 is a fun and kind of wild race….needless to say, it’s had it’s fair share of Hold My Beer moments.
In 2013, the series gave Indianapolis Motor Speedway its closest finish in IMS history. Patrick Dempsey won by .0026 seconds. Second through fourth places? Gabby Chaves (who drove full-time in IndyCar in 2015 with Bryan Herta Autosport and has since driven part time), Sage Karam (who’s driven part time in IndyCar for Chip Ganassi Racing and Dreyer and Reinbold since 2014) and Carlos Munoz (who’s driven full time for Andretti Autosport and A.J. Foyt Enterprises since 2014).
